Working in medicine is stressful enough, even if you’re neurotypical. But working in a high-stress job with neurodivergence can feel overwhelming and sometimes isolating. Luckily, there are ways to thrive and make our work environments more supportive.
There are things we can all do, either as neurodivergent people or as people who support them. We can advocate for changes in our workplaces, like creating spaces that cater to diverse ways of thinking, and collaborating with others who understand and share similar experiences.
The compounded effects of stress and unmet needs can have debilitating effects on people with neurodivergent traits, and can even shorten their life span.
But we can help by sharing our own experiences and needs, and reaching out to neurodiversity groups or communities for support and guidance. Sharing our experiences and learning from others can empower us to create positive changes in our lives and work environments.
